🚧 PSE&G Construction Update 🚧

PSE&G has been upgrading the city’s underground gas infrastructure over the past few weeks. Last week, crews wrapped up work on Crosswicks Street, and this week, they moved on to Farnsworth Avenue.

Normally, roads are reopened around 3:30 PM after construction ends for the day. Today (Friday, August 8th), Farnsworth Avenue will stay closed until about 4:30 PM so PSE&G can bring in a street sweeper to clean the roadway after work is finished.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while these important upgrades are completed - we know it can be inconvenient, but it’s all part of keeping our infrastructure safe and reliable!

🧹 Back Then: Bordentown’s Original Street Sweeper

Here’s a look back to the 1930s, when street sweeping meant one driver, one machine, and some serious elbow grease!

This vintage photo shows the Bordentown City street sweeper hard at work, keeping the streets clean the old-fashioned way. These days, our sweeper might be a bit more modern - and yes, a little more high maintenance (sometimes taking an unscheduled day off) - but the mission hasn’t changed: keeping Bordentown City tidy, one street at a time!

📸 Recognize the street or the style? Got a story or memory? Share it with us in the comments!

**ADVISORY** Attention: Bordentown Residents & Businesses - Please read the latest update below from PSE&G on their ongoing gas line replacement project as it may affect your street in the coming weeks.

..................................................................................................................................

For any questions or feedback, please call:  1-833-661-6400

We’re Improving the Gas System in Your Neighborhood.

This critical work will help keep your gas service safe and reliable. Read below to learn more about work in your area.

First, PSE&G and our approved contractors will be upgrading aging underground gas pipes on your street with new piping.

To upgrade the gas lines, we dig trenches and lay new pipes. At the end of each day, the trenches are backfilled with temporary asphalt and plates are secured. As with any construction project, you will experience changes in traffic patterns, loud noise, and the presence of heavy equipment and machinery.

There will be road closures along Farnsworth Ave between Walnut Street and W Union Street beginning on Monday, August 4, 2025, weather permitting.  Motorists are advised to plan ahead and use approved traffic detours. We will work with local police departments to manage traffic within the work zone for the duration of construction.

Typical work hours are between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with potential for weekend work. Schedules are estimates, weather dependent and subject to change. Throughout the duration of construction, please abide by all “No Parking” signs as they will be posted 24-48 hours before work is scheduled to begin on each street.

Next, our technician will schedule an appointment to access your home or business to connect the service line and gas meter to the new gas main. To improve safety, if your meter is inside, PSE&G will move the meter to the outside of your home or business.

During the reconnection, expect to be without gas service for 2-4 hours. We will do our best to minimize your time without gas service. At the time of your appointment, we will have to dig small openings on your property and/or in the street. When we relocate the meter, our technician will consult with you about your meter’s placement outside of the home to maintain our safety standards. Our technician will reconnect and relight all appliances once your service has been completed. If you are not able to legally provide access to the property in question and require landlord approval, please let us know when we contact you to schedule your service appointment.

Finally, we will restore any disturbance after the service work is completed. Grass areas will be restored and reseeded and concrete or asphalt openings will be patched until final restoration work is scheduled.

PSE&G is committed to maintaining excellent customer service, and will replace any disturbances in kind. The time between the service appointment and final restoration on your property may vary depending on weather conditions, crew availability, and time of year. You will receive a notification when final roadway restoration with permanent paving is scheduled.

For more information about this project, as well as specific information about your neighborhood, please visit pseg.com/GasWork. To reach a project representative directly, call our dedicated hotline at 1-833-661-6400. Look for more communications as work progresses. As a general reminder, if you smell gas, leave the area and call 911 or PSE&G at 1-800-880-PSEG (7734).

Storm related closure

Today, we mark the end of an incredible chapter as Captain Matthew J. Simmons IV retires from the City of Bordentown Police Department after more than 20 years of devoted service.

Captain Simmons began his law enforcement journey in August 1999 at the Gloucester County Police Academy. While working full time as an investigator with the Burlington County Sheriff’s Office, he started with us as a part-time Class 2 Special Officer later that year. In November 2001, he became a full-time patrolman for the City of Bordentown, quickly rising through the ranks due to his commitment and skill.

He served as Detective around 2003-2004, demonstrating relentless dedication to keeping our community safe. In 2006, Captain Simmons became Sergeant - a role in which he served for many years and made an unforgettable impact, especially while working alongside his K9 partner, Terri. Together, they made an incredible 245 arrests, showcasing their powerful teamwork and unyielding resolve.

A lifelong Bordentown resident, Matt followed in the footsteps of his father, who served as Police Chief for many years. He lives here with his wife Christie and son Matthew, remaining deeply rooted in the community.

Join us in celebrating Captain Simmons today! A true example of commitment, integrity, and heart. Thank you for your service, Captain. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement!
