Today, we proudly share the upcoming retirement of Jennifer Smith, whose final day of service with the City of Bordentown will be December 31, 2025, closing out an extraordinary 41-year career dedicated almost entirely to public service.

Jennifer began her journey with the City in May of 1984, at just 18 years old, fresh out of high school, after responding to a help-wanted ad in the newspaper. What started as a first job quickly became a lifelong calling. Over the next four decades, Jennifer devoted her professional life to serving Bordentown, growing alongside the City and becoming one of its most knowledgeable, dependable, and respected public servants.

When Jennifer first started, City Hall was staffed by a team of 16 women, each with clearly defined roles. As the years went on and City operations evolved, that number gradually shrank. Today, there are just five people—Jennifer included—handling responsibilities that once required many more hands. Time and again, Jennifer willingly stepped up, always ready to take on more responsibility whenever the City needed her, never hesitating to do what was best for the organization and the residents it serves.

Her career is a testament to adaptability, dedication, and an unmatched work ethic. Jennifer began in the Construction Office as an assistant, while also serving as Planning Board Secretary and Assistant to the Municipal Court Office, roles she held until the State DCA assumed responsibility for the Construction Office in 1991. In 1988, she was appointed City Recycling Coordinator, a role she carried with pride as environmental programs took shape statewide.

In 1991, Jennifer transitioned to the Water Department as Clerk, while continuing her role as Planning Board Secretary and taking on Accounts Payable responsibilities. In 1999, she joined the Finance Office as Assistant to the Chief Financial Officer, further expanding her role in the City’s day-to-day operations.

Jennifer’s leadership and institutional knowledge continued to grow. In 2008, she was appointed Deputy Registrar and Certified Tax Collector. In 2014, she assumed the role of Assistant Housing, Zoning, and Code Enforcement Officer, followed by her appointment as Clean Communities Coordinator in 2015. In 2020, she was named Assistant Municipal Treasurer, and in 2023, she was appointed Acting City Clerk—all while continuing to serve in several of her previous roles simultaneously.

Throughout her 41 years of service, Jennifer has worn more hats than most could count. Her dedication, professionalism, and deep understanding of City operations have made her an invaluable resource not only to residents, but to elected officials and coworkers alike. She credits the many incredible people she has worked with over the years for teaching her so much and helping shape the public servant she became. She is especially grateful for the support of CJ Mugavero, Joseph Malone, Bob Erickson, and the entire City Hall team.

As she looks ahead to retirement, Jennifer says she will miss the current City Hall staff the most—the close-knit team that has carried so much together—Gina, Rachel, Peggy, and Andy, whose dedication, teamwork, and support have meant more to her than words can express.

Outside of City Hall, Jennifer is a proud mother of two daughters, a loving mother-in-law to two sons-in-law, and a devoted grandmother to two grandchildren. As she enters this next chapter, Jennifer looks forward to traveling—checking off her long-held goal of visiting every country in Europe, and finally enjoying time at her own pace after decades of service to others.

We are sharing this announcement now so that residents, colleagues, and friends have time to stop by and personally wish Jennifer well before her final day. Her impact on the City of Bordentown cannot be measured in titles alone—it is found in the relationships she built, the knowledge she passed on, and the countless ways she helped keep City Hall running.

And who knows… after 41 years and a lifetime of stories, maybe we’ll all be reading or listening to a “Bordentown City Revealed” book or podcast in 2026.

Please join us in thanking Jennifer Smith for her remarkable service and wishing her all the happiness, adventure, and well-earned rest she deserves in retirement.
